2009 Swimathon

The Portishead Rotary Club, 13th Annual Swimathon 2009

held on

Saturday 28th March at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, Portishead

Another great success in this years local events callendar!

This year we are supporting:

Children with Leukaemia & BRACE (Bristol Research into Alzheimer's)

as well as

Schools Projects and Local Groups and Charities

We are very pleased to announce that all of the costs this year for the set up and organisation of the event were more than covered by the generous donations from local businesses.  This means that all the sponsorship raised from teams entering this year go directly to the nominated charities.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be chasing the teams for their sponship money, so we can announce the grand total raised, as quickly as possible.

The Rotary Club wish to sincerely thank all the Sponsors once again for their help in making the Swimathon a continuing success, our appreciation and thanks also to the editorial staff whose support through their publications have raised the awareness of the Swimathon and other Rotary Events.  Our thanks also to the manager & staff at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre who worked tirelessly on the day supporting our club members in ensuring the event ran smoothly.

We were all extremely pleased to welcome Gemma Cooper, Weather Girl from BBC Points West, who started the first four swimming sessions and rallied on the teams and their supporters, taking time to talk to a number of individual swimmers.

This year nearly 70 teams took part, which amounted to some 420 swimmers.  A total of 4864 lengths were swum over seven sessions of 35 minutes.  The youngest swimmers this year was just 5 years old.

Once again Portishead Running Club topped their record from last year, of most lengths swum with 124 lengths.  However, at least 6 teams entering this year topped  an incredible 100 lengths within their 35 minute sessions.

This year Portishead Rotary entered their own team.  It was clear that very little training had taken place prior to the event, however, they still managed a moderately respectable 59 lengths by the end of the last session.
